Singer Lewis Capaldi Sidelined From Touring by Tourette Syndrome
TUESDAY, June 27, 2023 (HealthDay News) -- After appearing to lose his voice at a Saturday appearance, singer Lewis Capaldi is canceling his tour.
Capaldi, who has Tourette syndrome, cited the need to adjust to the impact of the condition, the Associated Press reported.
“First of all, thank you to Glastonbury for having me, for singing along when I needed it and for all the amazing messages afterwards,” he said in a statement after the appearance at the Glastonbury Festival in southwest England.
“The fact that this probably won’t come as a surprise doesn’t make it any easier to write, but I’m very sorry to let you know I’m going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future,” Capaldi added.
Capaldi previously said he was happy to have his Tourette symptoms diagnosed and was trying “not to learn too much” about his condition because he would then feel worse. He spoke with the AP in April after his Netflix documentary, “How I’m Feeling Now” was released.
The 26-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter first revealed last September that he had the neurological disorder that causes people to have “tics,” making involuntary sounds and movements.
He had been scheduled to continue his tour in Switzerland, Australia, South Korea, Iceland and other countries before finishing Oct. 7 in the United Arab Emirates.
Capaldi said he was “still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”
